The Swimming Pool
The existence of an abandoned stone quarry used as a crusher depot by the Santa Fe Railroad was evidently the determining factor in the location of the mansion. The deep excavations for the quarry were taken advantage of in the construction of a magnificent swimming pool that was in full use long before plans for the house were even begun. The white ‘T’ shaped outline is the border of that pool. Olympic size in both directions, the pool’s upkeep became a problem for the Sisters so they had it filled in.
Gargoyles
The gargoyles above the pool terrace were once a part of the mansion’s drainage system. Architects often used spouts in the shape of mythical figures to help direct rainwater clear of the building to protect the stone. These spouts were called ‘gargoyles’ because of the gurgling sound of the water.
