The cantilevered stone staircase leading to the second floor is complimented by the self-supporting corbels which are ornately carved with images of mythological creatures. Just above these is the balcony adjacent to Mr. Marland’s quarters. It displays a latin phrase carved in the stone which loosely translated means “A man’s home is his castle."
